View Building a Hurricane Proof House
Building a Hurricane Proof House

Living on the east coast of North Carolina, we experience hurricanes from time to time in the Atlantic. Hurricanes have the potential to cause significant damage to homes and buildings. Building homes that can better withstand the winds from hurricanes is a consideration in all housing developments. Seventh grades students were tasked to design and build the most wind resistant houses they could construct, using materials provided for them. They were given a budget of $100,000. Students discussed in their groups the design of the houses they would create. They thought how best to design their house, considering strength and practicality. Houses were tested with a leaf blower to simulate hurricane strength winds.
